Sphynx Cat FAQ

General Questions

Are Sphynx cats really hairless?

Not completely. Most Sphynx cats have a fine peach-fuzz texture that feels similar to suede or warm velvet. Some have more fuzz than others depending on genetics, climate, and season.

Are Sphynx cats hypoallergenic?

No cat is truly hypoallergenic. People are allergic to proteins in saliva and skin oils, not just fur. Some allergy sufferers tolerate Sphynx better because there is less hair spreading dander around the home, but others still react strongly.

Are Sphynx cats high maintenance?

They are high-engagement rather than high-maintenance. They thrive on companionship, interaction, and attention. Grooming needs are different than furry cats, but not necessarily harder once you establish a routine.

Do Sphynx cats get cold easily?

Yes. Sphynx cats seek warmth constantly and love blankets, heated beds, sunny windows, and cuddling with their humans.

Are Sphynx cats affectionate?

Very. Sphynx are known for being extremely social, affectionate, intelligent, and people-oriented. Many act more like little companions than traditional independent cats.

Grooming & Skin Care

How often should I bathe my Sphynx?

We do not recommend excessive bathing. Overbathing strips the natural oils from the skin and often causes the body to produce even more oil. Most Sphynx do best with occasional baths only when necessary, combined with regular wipe-downs or grooming gloves.

What do you recommend for routine grooming?

We prefer using grooming gloves or gentle wipe-downs weekly to remove excess oils and buildup. Nails and ears should also be cleaned regularly.

Why do Sphynx get dirty?

Without fur to absorb oils, the oils remain on the skin and can collect dirt, dust, and debris more visibly than in coated cats.

Why do the ears get dark buildup?

Dark ear wax is extremely common in Sphynx cats and does not automatically mean ear infections. True infections are usually accompanied by redness, odor, irritation, swelling, or discomfort.

Why does my Sphynx get yeast buildup or skin irritation?

Sphynx skin can sometimes develop yeast overgrowth, especially in warm skin folds. Early management is important. We recommend monitoring for redness, odor, greasy buildup, or irritation and treating issues early before they progress.

Health Questions

Are Sphynx cats unhealthy?

No. Well-bred Sphynx cats can live long, healthy lives. Like all breeds, they have certain health conditions breeders monitor carefully.

What is HCM?

HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) is a heart disease found in many cat breeds, not just Sphynx. 1 in 7 cats of all breeds will develop heart disease. Responsible breeders perform regular echocardiograms to monitor their breeding cats.

Does a normal heart scan guarantee a cat will never develop HCM?

No. Heart scans are a snapshot in time. A normal scan is important and reassuring, but no breeder or veterinarian can guarantee a cat will never develop HCM later in life.

Why don’t you guarantee against HCM forever?

Because no breeder can ethically guarantee against a disease that can develop later despite screening. What matters most is responsible breeding practices, transparency, and ongoing cardiac monitoring.

Should I get pet insurance?

Absolutely. Emergency veterinary care has become extremely expensive. Conditions such as urinary blockages, heart failure, surgeries, or hospitalization can cost thousands of dollars unexpectedly. Pet insurance helps families make medical decisions based on care rather than finances.

Do Sphynx need special food?

They do best on a diet of wet and dry food. We free feed our cats. Sphynx require extra calories to keep up with their high metabolism.

Personality & Lifestyle

Can Sphynx cats be left alone all day?

They generally prefer companionship and do best in homes where they receive plenty of interaction. They do best in busy homes with other pets.

Are Sphynx good with children and dogs?

Most are very social and adapt well to respectful children and cat-friendly dogs when properly introduced.

Are Sphynx energetic?

Yes. Sphynx are playful, athletic, curious, and intelligent well into adulthood. They are a high energy breed.

Kitten Adoption Questions

Why do you require pet insurance?

Because emergencies happen unexpectedly, even in healthy cats. Insurance protects both the cat and the family from difficult financial situations during emergencies.

Do you ship kittens?

Yes. Transportation options vary depending on location and weather conditions. Safety is always our top priority.

Will my kitten be litter trained?

Yes. Kittens are started on litter training before leaving our home.

Can I declaw my Sphynx?

No. We strongly oppose declawing. Declawing removes part of the toe structure and can cause long-term physical and behavioral problems.

Final Thoughts

Sphynx cats are intelligent, emotional, affectionate companions that thrive when treated as part of the family. They are not “fragile” cats, but they are deeply social and dependent on human interaction and proper care. With responsible ownership, they can be extraordinary lifelong companions.
